A subsidiary of Foxconn, the world's leading producer of electronic products, received a license for its US$200 million facility to produce cell phones and spare parts in northern Vietnam in February.
The plant would be located in the Binh Xuyen II Urban Industrial Zone in Vinh Phuc province, 60 kilometers north of Hanoi. It is scheduled to start production from the first quarter of 2010. The factory of Effinville International Co. Ltd (Foxconn's subsidiary), which will be the biggest of its kind in the country, will annually produce 89 million cellphones and tens of millions of cellphone parts.
The firm's latest move comes as part of the group's investment plan to inject $5 billion into hi-tech projects across Vietnam.
It plans to invest around $1 billion in Ho Chi Minh City to make high-tech products and set up a high-tech commercial service center in the new Thu Thiem urban area.
Taiwan's Foxconn said it would produce Nokia phones, iPods, PlayStations and Sony laptops.
